Background of the Study

Anxiety disorders are prevalent in elderly populations, and they significantly impact the well-being of older adults. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) has emerged as one of the most effective psychotherapeutic interventions for treating anxiety disorders, including among the elderly. However, the application and effectiveness of CBT for older adults in regions like Yobe State have not been thoroughly investigated. Elderly individuals in Yobe State face unique challenges related to anxiety, including limited access to mental health services, cultural stigma surrounding mental health, and a lack of awareness about therapeutic options such as CBT (Salihu et al., 2024). This study seeks to explore the impact of CBT on reducing anxiety among elderly individuals in Yobe State and assess its potential as a viable intervention for managing anxiety in this population.

Statement of the Problem

Elderly individuals in Yobe State often suffer from anxiety, which can lead to isolation, reduced quality of life, and physical health problems. However, the use of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy in this population remains under-researched. This study aims to assess the impact of CBT on anxiety levels among elderly individuals in Yobe State, with a particular focus on its effectiveness, accessibility, and acceptance in the local context.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To investigate the effectiveness of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy in reducing anxiety among elderly individuals in Yobe State.

  2. To assess the feasibility and accessibility of CBT as an intervention for anxiety in older adults in Yobe State.

  3. To recommend strategies for incorporating CBT into mental health care for the elderly in Yobe State.

Research Questions

  1. How effective is Cognitive Behavioral Therapy in reducing anxiety among elderly individuals in Yobe State?

  2. How accessible and acceptable is CBT for elderly individuals in Yobe State?

  3. What strategies can be implemented to increase the use of CBT in treating anxiety among elderly individuals in Yobe State?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy will significantly reduce anxiety levels among elderly individuals in Yobe State.

  2. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy is a feasible and acceptable intervention for treating anxiety in older adults in Yobe State.

  3. The implementation of CBT programs will improve mental health outcomes among elderly individuals in Yobe State.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will focus on elderly individuals in Yobe State who suffer from anxiety disorders. Limitations may include challenges in recruiting participants due to cultural stigma surrounding mental health care, as well as the difficulty in ensuring adherence to therapy sessions.
